The Gallagher S16Li Solar Energiser is a compact, lightweight unit designed for strip grazing, small paddocks and temporary fencing setups where you want something simple, portable and reliable without the hassle of swapping batteries in and out.

It runs off an integrated lithium battery paired with a 3W solar panel, so once it’s set up, it largely looks after itself. One of the big advantages with this model is that it charges in daylight rather than relying on direct sunlight, which makes a noticeable difference in the UK. Even on overcast days it will continue to top itself up, and in our experience these lithium units tend to hold their charge far better than older lead-acid battery systems.

In day-to-day use, this is best suited to short fence runs — typically up to around 1–1.5km in good conditions — and works particularly well for rotational grazing with horses or ponies, as well as smaller livestock setups. It’s light enough to move easily, quick to set up and ideal for situations where your fencing layout changes regularly.

That said, it’s important to be realistic about what this unit is designed to do. It’s not a high-power energiser, so it won’t cope well with long boundary fences, heavy vegetation or anything that’s draining power constantly. It’s also not suitable for electric netting, which needs a stronger output to perform properly.

As with any electric fence, earthing is key. To get the best from it, we recommend using at least a 0.5m earth stake (not included) and making sure it’s driven into reasonably moist ground. A poor earth will make even the best energiser look weak.

If you’re after a tidy, low-maintenance solar unit for smaller setups — something you can put out, trust and not have to keep fiddling with — the S16Li fits the bill nicely.
